A useful framework for self-managing design teams.
Introduction
Design programs are broad initiatives aimed to provide support to the team in areas that may not be part of typical work, but are important for fostering a positive, productive work environment.
Why they are important
It is easy to get caught up in the cycle of business as usual. For designers this typically means feature work in their design tool of choice. If special attention isn’t made for improving or maintaining the other aspects of work life, we run the risk of hindering our team, or worse, losing them altogether.
How it works
Each program is created by a designated program manager and sponsor. Together they complete a program charter outlining the purpose of the program, based on the needs of the team.
The program manager and sponsor also establish the first set of initiatives for the program and follow the program management guide to manage, execute, and control the program.
Team members are encouraged to propose activities that reinforce program initiatives and address deficiencies within the team. Those who propose activities are likely to be designated as activity coordinators to ensure said activities are carried out at the proper cadence. Team members can also vote to remove or modify activities that are ineffective or no longer fulfill their original intent.
